The Lexy Marketing team, along with chefs from across the business attended a food tour in Southall, West London, hosted by the fabulous Urban Rajah.
Here, our Marketing Assistant, Monique, fills us in on what they got up to…
From the very first moment I stepped out of the station, I was made aware of just how rich in culture this large suburban district of West London is. Southall has a largely South Asian population, sometimes known as “Little India” and home to the first pub in England that accepted Indian Rupees as a form of payment!
The foodie tour consisted of restaurant visits, a tour of the local markets, wholesalers and even a prop supplier!
Our first stop was the tasty traditional breakfast, served up with a side of authentic chai tea. We then paid a visit to a local wholesaler where we were faced with a warehouse filled to the brim with never seen before fruit, vegetables, spices and so much more. It was great seeing the local merchants interact with our chefs, a couple even got invitations for curry at their homes!
The most interesting part of the trip was being introduced to authentic dishes that I hadn’t seen in my local Indian restaurant…There wasn’t a korma in sight! (Although the waiter did cautiously recommended we order a korma instead, we weren’t having any of it!).
We went to try something new and we walked away feeling very inspired and extremely full. We came, we ate, we conquered!
It was a great opportunity to introduce the chefs to a variety of flavours, spices, fruit and vegetables to broaden their menus for their sites.
A massive thank you to Urban Rajah for his time, and to the Chefs for being such a pleasure to be with all day. I think I can speak for everyone when I say It was a lovely day out.
